One of the top races at the Glenbrook North Sectional lived up to its billing.
Glenbrook South and Conant kicked off the state series Saturday by both breaking the pool record in the 200-yard medley.
Thomas Pollick’s freestyle anchor leg earned the Titans first place in 1:35.62. The Cougars followed close behind in 1:35.70. Glenbrook North (1:38.73) and Deerfield (1:38.66) also qualified for State in the relay.
“I knew where he was, and I knew I was catching up to him,” said Pollick, who started his swim chasing Alex Shozda.
Glenbrook South’s foursome — Ryan Hianik, Jon Salomon, Ryan Brander, Pollick — will be a championship-finals contender at next weekend’s State Meet at Evanston once the Titans shave and are fully rested.
“We always love to go fast in this event,” Hianik said. “It gets the whole team pumped up. Us going this fast is a good sign of how we will perform at the State Meet.”
Conant’s Brandon Grzegorek, Martin Pozniak, Alan Wojciechowski and Shozda came into the sectional with the top time and nearly held off Glenbrook South.
“Hopefully, we will go faster next week,” said Salomon, a freshman who swims with three seniors.
Glenbrook South, which advanced a meet-best 13 entries to Evanston, also beat Conant in the 200 free relay with its time of 1:26.05. The Cougars still qualified for the State Meet.
Conant then won the 400 free relay in 3:11.12 behind Jonathon Burke, Pozniak, Wojciechowski and Shozda.
Burke was the sectional’s only two-event winner, finishing first in the 200 free (1:43.50) and the 500 free (4:37.09). His 500 time established a pool record.
Sophomores Shozda and Pozniak also won sectional titles for the Cougars, who advanced nine entries at Glenbrook North. Shozda was first in the 100 free (46.65), and Pozniak was first in the 100 backstroke (51.71).
Deerfield’s Kevin Ewing showed off his speed in the 200 IM. Pushing through his taper, the senior easily won the race, touching out in a pool record 1:56.17. He was the only IMer to survive the sectional cut.
“I wanted to get the highest seed possible for next week so I could go up against the best competition,” said Ewing, who also made it to the final weekend of the season in the 100 backstroke. “I want to be able to swim with the top six next to me. That will make me go faster.”
Maine East enjoyed a big day in the pool in the morning when divers Daniel Sieghart and Jeremy Rohrman earned scores that should qualify them to Evanston. They would be the first boys in the whole program to compete at the State Meet since 1992 and the first divers since 1974.
Rohrman took third with 389.50 points, and Sieghart followed in fourth with 381.75. Deerfield’s Sean Scarry won with 458.60 points.
“It means all the hours of practice and all the hard work paid off,” Rohrman said of a trip to the State Meet.
