Gloria Moschel, of Glenview, is a watercolor artist who is inspired by the mountains of Mexico and South America.

Moschel has two daughters, Lisa, of Austin, Texas. Her daughter Jackie, an attorney, lives in Glenview. A Carl Schurz (Chicago) High School graduate, Moschel, is 16-year Glenview resident who studied at Northeastern Illinois University and the Art Institute of Chicago. A Chicago Taft High School art teacher for seven years, Moschel has four grandchildren.

She exhibited her works last summer at Northbrook’s Zapatista Restaurant in Willow Festival at Waukegan and Willow Roads.

Q. What’s your favorite travel spot?

A. “My favorite destination is either Oaxaca, Mexico or Cusco, Peru. They are both high elevations, the air is very clear and the colors are very vibrant. I just came back from Ecuador. We had a three generation trip, (Lisa and Moschel’s granddaughter Amanda, 28) but I can’t do high altitudes anymore.”

Q. You’re involved with the Glenview Art League. What is your favorite art league event?

A. “The (summer) art fair is good, and right now I am involved Youth Art Fair (the 24th annual Youth Art Fair held at Attea Middle School, 2500 Chestnut, Glenview on Sat. February 16, 2013).”

Q. Talk about your painting “The Shepherds” exhibited this summer at Zapatista Restaurant.

A. “The shepherds, they were mountain people and they were sheepherders on the high plateau in Central Mexico. I painted it eight years ago and I caught it just as there was a hazy sundown. I did it from my photograph.”

Q. Which media are you using now as an artist?

A. “Watercolor. Right now, I am experimenting with water on YUPO, a plastic paper. Your colors just sort of bead up on it, they don’t just sink in, they lay on top of it. YUPO has no absorbency and it gives you very bright color.”

Q. How does the Glenview Art League inspire you?

A. “It (GAL) gives you a reason a paint, first of all, and it gives you the opportunity of being in the art community. It gives you a chance to exhibit your art and with the Glenview Youth Air Fair, it gives you a chance to inspire young artists which is what I have always been about.”
