It’s all about the eyes for Glenview Ophthalmologist

GLENVIEW — When talking about eyes, Dr. Adam Cohen’s eyes light up.

“I think that this region of the face is the most beautiful and the most striking feature,” said the board-certified ophthalmologist, who last April left the private practice he’d been part of for six years to open up his own practice, The Art of Eyes in Glenview.

Cohen, who is also a fellow of the American Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery specializes in eyelid and facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, orbital and lacrimal surgery and cosmetic laser surgery for men and women.

More specifically, his procedures include eyelid lifts, which is the removal of excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids, fat injections to eyelids and cheeks, brow lifts, mid face lifts, droopy eyelid repair, Botox and fillers. He also performs eyelid reconstruction after skin cancer, and treats tearing and eye socket disorders.

“Eye surgery is meticulous and takes so much finesse,” said Cohen, who was nominated as one of the top doctors in the U.S. by US News and World Report, and who was recently promoted to section director of oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery at Rush University Medical Center. “The work is fine and detailed, and it’s an elegant area to work on. I really enjoy that.”

Cohen said his surgeries are very customized and individualized based on the patient’s facial features.

“I don’t just look at your eyelids,” he said. “I look at your eyebrows, I look at your cheeks, I take your whole face into account before I decide exactly what I am doing with your eyelids.”

Cohen, who is also an assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center and who oversees resident training has written more than 30 papers on eyelid and facial plastic surgery.

His patients range in age from children with congenital disorders to patients with skin cancer, and cosmetic patients from 30-60 years old.

“There is a whole host of people who have droopy eyelids, people who have aged and developed excess skin, and if you look at someone and they look tired, that’s the first place you notice,” said Cohen, “People often complain that no matter how much sleep they get, they always feel like they look tired.”

Eyelid surgery starts at around $2,800, and Cohen said not only is there very little down time versus other cosmetic procedures, but the surgery can make patients look 10 years younger.

“Eyelid surgery really does refresh you and take years off your appearance,” said Cohen. “It gives you an overall rejuvenated look.”

The Art of Eyes consists of Dr. Cohen, Elissa Rosenberg, who is the executive director and office manager, and Aggie Chapsky-Astrella, a licensed esthetician.

“With Dr. Cohen, it’s all about the eyes, but so many of the patients want skin care treatments as well, and that’s what I do,” said Astrella, who has worked in the field for 16 years, “My main focus is educating patients on healthy skin care for every day. I show them proper cleansing, exfoliating, treating and protecting the face.”

Astrella’s services include facials, medical grade facials, chemical peels, IPL laser procedures, waxing, and makeup application.

“The chemical peels and laser procedures rejuvenate and brighten the skin, and get rid of spots and fine lines,” Astrella said.

Facials range from $100-$300, and are recommended monthly.

“We want to give your patients what they need,” said Cohen, “And if they are interested in an eyelid procedure, they are usually interested in skin care, as well.”
