Family Friendly: Northbrook Kids’ Duathlon has kids running and biking

Watch your kids get a great workout at the fifth annual Kids’ Duathlon, 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 18 at Meadowhill Park and the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, 1479 Maple Ave., Northbrook.

“It’s basically two-thirds of a triathlon,” said Ethan Williams, Leisure Services supervisor for the Northbrook Park District. “We have the biking aspect of it and we also have a run. The unique thing about the biking portion is that it’s at the Velodrome.”

Kids ages 5-7 bike and run 1/4 mile; ages 8-10, 1/2 mile; and ages 11-14, 1 mile.

“We try to promote health and fitness,” Williams said. “It’s a great way, in the middle of the summer, to get kids out doing something that they might not normally do.”

The cost is $10, which includes pizza, drinks and admission to the Meadowhill Aquatic Center after the event. Kids should bring a bicycle, helmet and tennis shoes. They can register in advance or at the event.
