Town hall meeting Monday explains new voting laws

Several local state lawmakers are presenting a voter information session on Monday, focusing on new legislation.

The town hall meeting is 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Community Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview Road, in Wilmette.

“The biggest change will now allow for same-day voter registration,” said state Rep. Laura Fine, D-17th.

“I know many people are not able to take advantage of already existing early or regular voting opportunities, due to employment or moving and simply forgetting to update their voter registration in time.”

Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, D-16th and Cook County Clerk David Orr will discuss the changes.

Also attending is state Sen. Daniel Biss, D-9th, and state representatives Lou Lang, D-16th, Robyn Gabel, D-18th and Fine.

Other changes to the law are election day voter registration at limited sites, longer hours for early voting, identification requirements for people who register and vote on the same day, the state’s new online voter registration system at https://ova.elections.il.gov/) and a campus-based voting option for Illinois university students who want to register and vote on election day.
