The Schaumburg Seminoles have had an outstanding record of producing high-level shortstops over the last six years, as six players have signed with Division I colleges during that span.

Mario Tursi is the latest member of that group. The 2014 Glenbrook South graduate is set to leave next month for SIU-Edwardsville, where he’ll try to earn a starting spot.

Tursi has developed into a gap-to-gap hitter over the last four years by improving his strength and skill at the plate, according to Seminoles president and coach Russ Gangler, but Tursi’s elite skills have always been leadership and defense. In fact, Gangler said Tursi’s defensive ability is second to none among those Seminoles shortstops to sign scholarships, including draftees Jason Leblebijian, Matt Anderson and Ryan Lillard.

“He’s as good, or better, than any of those guys,” Gangler said of Tursi. “He’s got a chance to be a very good Division I player and the sky’s the limit; maybe, in three years, [he’ll] get drafted if he continues to work hard.”
