Glenbrook South grad Oliva Smoliga’s training hampered by illness

All summer, the Athens Bulldog Swim Club’s daily workouts have been written out on a piece of notebook paper and posted on a wall near the pool.

In the upper-right hand corner of that sheet of paper has been a countdown to the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships, which begin on Wednesday in Irvine, California.

About three months ago, seeing that figure was exciting for Glenview native Olivia Smoliga, who’s a sophomore-to-be at Georgia.

“I remember so vividly, [it reading] 100 days,” said Smoliga, the 2014 NCAA champion in the 50-yard freestyle. “I was like, ‘That’s so much time. It’s going to be great. I can train and really get into the shape I want to be in.’”
