Northbrook’s Nick Hardy part of Illini trio in Western Amateur match play

CHICAGO — No player from the Illinois men’s golf team has ever won the Western Amateur.

Illini coach Mike Small said he likes his team’s chances with three players advancing to Friday’s match play at The Beverly Country Club. Rising senior Brian Campbell, rising junior Charlie Danielson and incoming freshman Nick Hardy all finished inside the top 16 after the 72 holes of stroke play ended Thursday.

Zach Barlow, a 2010 Illinois graduate, was the 2009 Western Amateur runner-up at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest.

“It says a lot about the kids,” Small said. “The kids are the program, and I am excited for them. Now, they have a chance to go out and win one of the biggest amateur tournaments in the world.”
