Northfield resident Jan Churchwell took the oath of office as New Trier Township assessor on July 30, taking over the post from Interim Assessor JoAnn Shrier Gordon.

Churchwell was officially sworn in by Township Clerk Jerome Hoynes, with Supervisor Paddie Brennen in attendance.

“The Assessor’s Office at New Trier Township has an excellent reputation of service to the community and to the citizens,” Churchwell said. “I’ll make sure that’s what the Assessor’s Office continues to do.”

As assessor, Churchwell’s office will provide a variety of services and act as a liaison between the taxpayer and the Cook County Assessor’s Office. She hopes to help residents understand what their property taxes do while assisting them with problems related to the assessment process and tax collection.

Churchwell plans to us her previous work experience in real estate to assist residents. She also plans to maintain discussions with other townships and Cook County officials to better the Township’s programs.

“Part of her career was in real estate, so she understands the real estate market in the north shore and she’s good with people,” Brennen said.

Churchwell recently completed her course of qualifications, which included completing five courses over a two month period to become a Certified Illinois Assessing Officer.

“This is an entirely new undertaking for me and I’m very happy about it,” Churchwell said. “I love New Trier Township. It’s been my home for most of my life. I’m really, really delighted to serve the residents of the Township.”

Deputy Assessor Lois Cross will continue in her position to provide information and assistance to Township residents. Cross is available to help citizens with appeals, exemptions and refunds, sales and building permits, taxpayer of record information, property tax identification numbers, name and address changes, tax exempt property listings, plat maps, tax rate information and much more.

An induction ceremony for Churchwell will be held at the next Township Board of Trustees meeting at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Township Office, 739 Elm St. in Winnetka.

The Assessor’s Office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents may view a list of services offered on the Township website at
