Benefits
The Optimist Club will host its fourth annual Friend of Youth Fundraiser at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at White Eagle Banquet Hall, 6839 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles. Tickets are $100 per person. The Chicago Botanic Garden

Registration for the 2012 summer day camp programs has begun. In addition to the Chicago Botanic Garden’s week long summer day camp, Camp CBG now offers full-day camps (from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) for two weeks for children ages 6-9. Parents who register their children by Feb. 29 will receive a $5 per camp “Early Bloomer” discount. Among the camps offered are My First Camp 2 & 3; Green Sprouts; Green Thumbs; Explorer; Adventurers; Leaders in Training; Yoga Bash; and Discover Dance.
Three Friends of Winter, a silhouette bonsai show, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 27-29. The program will feature a bonsai display, an interpreted display of the “Three Friends of Winter,” family activities and lectures.
Camp CBG provides exciting and enriching learning experiences for children ages 2-12. The Garden offers week long camps with morning, afternoon, and all-day options from June 18 to Aug. 17. Online registration is open through June.

In celebration of Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish Festival of Trees, will feature free family activities from 1-4 p.m. Jan. 29.

Cityscapes: Portraits of the Second City by Audrey McCartney Barrett, Glenview Resident — through Feb. 28. Cityscapes captures the vitality of Chicago’s neighborhoods and street life. Beginning with photographs, Barrett creates a montage of the very essence and character of a street scene. Audrey then challenges herself to capture the energy, rhythm, and emotional feeling of a place, as well as intriguing architectural forms and embellished facades. A self-taught artist, Glenview Art League member, and multiple award-winner, Barrett’s hope is to engage the viewer and share a moment of connection with her art and Chicago.

Summer 2012 Camp registration is going on now. “Kiddie Gras,” A Mardi Gras Family Event, 4-6 p.m. Feb. 4. Come to Park Center for a family-friendly Mardi Gras celebration for ages 3 and up that includes games, crafts, music and a bounce house. Enjoy a Cajun-friendly meal of chicken, macaroni, muffins, salad and more plus a mini balloon drop to end the evening. Advance registration required. The fee per person for park district residents is $8 for children/$6 for adults and $10/$7.50 for nonresidents.
Mystical Magic, a magic class for kids, 5:15-6:10 p.m. Feb. 7 at Park Center. Learn tricks using ropes, cards, coins, mind reading and more from professional magician Gary Kantor, and amaze your family and friends. For ages 5-12. Advance registration required and all materials provided. The fee is $20 for park district residents and $25 for nonresidents.
Creative Cooking with Everyday Gourmet 7-9:30 p.m. Feb. 7. Learn the secret to making the best pastry and pizza dough from scratch in this hands-on cooking class held in Park Center’s catering kitchen. Don’t forget containers to take home your delicious creations. For ages 18 and older. The fee is $50 for park district residents and $62.50 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Feb. 3.
Digital Cameras I, a four-week program for adults from 1-3 p.m. beginning Feb. 10 at Park Center. Discover the secrets of taking quality digital pictures, how to transfer pictures to a computer, organize photos and save backup copies to a CD. The class also covers some basic digital editing techniques and making prints of your pictures. Great for the novice/first time digital camera user! Please bring your digital camera and equipment to class. Advance registration required. The fee is $120 for park district residents and $150 for nonresidents. Open Public Ice Skating Every Day of the Week. Winter calls for ice skating! If it is a little too brisk to skate at one of the park district’s outdoor rinks, head over to one of the daily open public skating sessions at the Glenview Ice Center. Open skate is offered from noon-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday; from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday & Thursday; from 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday & Sunday; and from 8:15-10 p.m. Friday. Admission is $6.50 weekdays & weekends and $7.50 for Friday nights and holidays. Children ages 5 and younger skate free when skating with and adult. Skate rentals are available for $4.50.
Open hockey “Rat Time” 12:15-2 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays. The Glenview Ice Center sets aside one hour and 45 minutes for pick up hockey games. Players must be at least 18 years old and wear full equipment to participate. Admission: $9 or buy a 10-time Rat pass for $80. Goalies play for free!
The Grove

The Grove’s Natural Science Classroom is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 1421 Milwaukee Ave.
The Natural Science classroom features mammals as the theme in January. Individuals and families are welcome to discover nature through science equipment, environmental displays, touching tanks, etc.
Get Hooked on Hooking, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 4. Re-discover the craft of hand hooking rugs, the sister art of quilting, using strips of wool fabrics and a crochet style hook to create a beautiful accent piece. Recommended for ages 16 and up. Advance registration required. The fee is $35 for park district residents and $43.75 for nonresidents.
Bear Facts program for children ages 4-6 and an adult, 10-11 a.m. Feb. 18. Follow bear tracks, feel a bearskin rug and touch some real bear claws and teeth! Advance registration required. The fee is $12 per resident adult-child pair ($6 for each additional child) and $15 for non-residents and a child.
Prairie/Tyner Center
The Tyner Interpretive Center, 2400 Compass Road, is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays in January. Exterior exhibits and walking trails through the prairies are open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Remarkable Raptors for kids ages 4-6 and adults, 10-11:30 a.m. Jan. 28. Have you ever seen a hawk or an owl in your backyard? Learn what raptors are, how to look for signs of them in your backyard and why they are so important to our ecosystem. Includes a short trail walk and a craft. The resident fee is $12/parent-child pair and $15/pair for nonresidents. Additional children may be added for $6/$7.50 per child.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side, 10-11:30 a.m. Feb. 18. Find out how life on the prairie has evolved to survive all sorts of winter conditions. Learn different animal tracks and take home a guide to help identify your own backyard visitors. Dress for the weather and wear rugged shoes. Recommended for ages 13-adult. Advance registration required. The fee is $8 per resident and $10 for non-residents.
