The Chicago Botanic Garden

Registration for the 2012 summer day camp programs has begun. In addition to the Chicago Botanic Garden’s weeklong summer day camp, Camp CBG now offers full-day camps (from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) for two weeks for children ages 6-9. Parents who register their children by Feb. 29 will receive a $5 per camp “Early Bloomer” discount. Among the camps offered are My First Camp 2 & 3; Green Sprouts; Green Thumbs; Explorer; Adventurers; Leaders in Training; Yoga Bash; and Discover Dance.

Camp CBG provides exciting and enriching learning experiences for children ages 2-12. The Garden offers weeklong camps with morning, afternoon, and all-day options from June 18 to Aug. 17. Online registration is open through June.

The exhibition Treewhispers will be on display from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through April 8 in the Joutras Gallery. Visit www.treewhispers.com.

Weekend Family Classes for children ages 4-10 accompanied by an adult, will take place from 9:30-11 a.m. or from 1-2:30 p.m. Feb. 4, 18 and 25. Cityscapes: Portraits of the Second City by Audrey McCartney Barrett, Glenview Resident — through Feb. 28. Cityscapes captures the vitality of Chicago’s neighborhoods and street life. Beginning with photographs, Barrett creates a montage of the very essence and character of a street scene. Audrey then challenges herself to capture the energy, rhythm, and emotional feeling of a place, as well as intriguing architectural forms and embellished facades. A self-taught artist, Glenview Art League member, and multiple award-winner, Barrett’s hope is to engage the viewer and share a moment of connection with her art and Chicago.

“Summer in February” Glenview Park District Outdoor Pool Pass Sale through Feb. 29. “Summer in February” resident rates are $75 for an individual and $45 for each additional family member. Outdoor Sledding & Skating at Glenview Park District Parks. When snow and colder temperatures arrive, hop on your sled, lace up your skates and head on over to one of these neighborhood parks for some outdoor frosty fun!

With the exception of Cole Park, all sled hills and ice skating rinks are lighted for evening activities and close nightly at 10 p.m. Signs will be posted at each park’s entrance daily and on the Park District website at glenviewparks.org notifying whether the rinks/hills are open or closed. Or call the outdoor sledding/skating hotline (847) 724-3337 after 10:30 a.m. for updated conditions. Note: there are no supervision or warming facilities at any location.

If it is a little too brisk to skate outside, head over to the Glenview Ice Center, 1851 Landwehr Road, for one of the daily open public skating sessions. Open skate is offered from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursday; 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 8:15 to 10 p.m. Friday. Admission is $6.50 weekdays and weekends and $7.50 Friday nights and holidays. Children ages 5 and under skate free when skating with an adult. Skate rental are available for $4.50.

Historic Wagner Farm, 1510 Wagner Road, provides a unique opportunity for families to learn about our farming heritage and experience first hand “the way things used to be.” The Heritage Center and grounds are open daily. Stop by 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. The Heritage Center features interactive stations, milking parlor, greenhouse, authentic 1930’s store and museum store.

“Kiddie Gras,” A Mardi Gras Family Event, 4-6 p.m. Feb. 4. Come to Park Center for a family-friendly Mardi Gras celebration for ages 3 and up that includes games, crafts, music and a bounce house. Enjoy a Cajun-friendly meal of chicken, macaroni, muffins, salad and more plus a mini balloon drop to end the evening. Advance registration required. The fee per person for park district residents is $8 for children/$6 for adults and $10/$7.50 for nonresidents.

Mystical Magic, a magic class for kids, 5:15-6:10 p.m. Feb. 7 at Park Center. Learn tricks using ropes, cards, coins, mind reading and more from professional magician Gary Kantor, and amaze your family and friends. For ages 5-12. Advance registration required and all materials provided. The fee is $20 for park district residents and $25 for nonresidents.

Creative Cooking with Everyday Gourmet 7-9:30 p.m. Feb. 7. Learn the secret to making the best pastry and pizza dough from scratch in this hands-on cooking class held in Park Center’s catering kitchen. Don’t forget containers to take home your delicious creations. For ages 18 and older. The fee is $50 for park district residents and $62.50 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Feb. 3.

Digital Cameras I, a four-week program for adults from 1-3 p.m. beginning Feb. 10 at Park Center. Discover the secrets of taking quality digital pictures, how to transfer pictures to a computer, organize photos and save backup copies to a CD. The class also covers some basic digital editing techniques and making prints of your pictures. Great for the novice/first time digital camera user! Registration is going on now for Park Center’s Annual Princess Ball. It will be a night to remember for you and your little princess. The annual royal ball for girls, ages 4-12 years, and their special dates, will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 24 or 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave. Lovely gowns, music, dancing and refreshments will enhance the magical atmosphere. Warm Water Strength and Stretch. Borrow moves from yoga and tai chi and strengthen and stretch in the warm water. Perfect for those with muscle soreness, arthritis, back or joint pain or post physical therapy continuation. The six-week course takes place at Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave., from 5:10 to 5:55 p.m. beginning Feb. 14, or Feb. 16. Fee is $80 for ages 18 and older.

Girls 2012 Spring Softball Registration under way. Early bird registration ends Feb. 6 for girls softball leagues offered through the Park District for third- through eighth-graders and for first- and second-graders. Baby-sitting Clinic — Learn how to be the safest and most dependable baby-sitter on your block. This course provides teens ages 11 to 15 with leadership skills and knowledge necessary for basic child and infant care and first aid. Open hockey “Rat Time” 12:15-2 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays. The Glenview Ice Center sets aside one hour and 45 minutes for pick up hockey games. Players must be at least 18 years old and wear full equipment to participate. Admission: $9 or buy a 10-time Rat pass for $80. Goalies play for free!

The Grove

The Grove’s Natural Science Classroom is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 1421 Milwaukee Ave.

The Natural Science classroom features hawks and owls as the theme in February. Individuals and families are welcome to discover nature through science equipment, environmental displays, touching tanks, etc.

Get Hooked on Hooking, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 4. Re-discover the craft of hand hooking rugs, the sister art of quilting, using strips of wool fabrics and a crochet style hook to create a beautiful accent piece. Recommended for ages 16 and up. Advance registration required. The fee is $35 for park district residents and $43.75 for nonresidents.

Bear Facts program for children ages 4-6 and an adult, 10-11 a.m. Feb. 18. Follow bear tracks, feel a bearskin rug and touch some real bear claws and teeth! Advance registration required. The fee is $12 per resident adult-child pair.

Prairie/Tyner Center

The Tyner Interpretive Center, 2400 Compass Road, is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays in February. Exterior exhibits and walking trails through the prairies are open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset.
