The Chicago Botanic Garden

Registration for the 2012 summer day camp programs has begun. In addition to the Chicago Botanic Garden’s weeklong summer day camp, Camp CBG now offers full-day camps from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. for two weeks for children ages 6-9. Parents who register their children by Feb. 29 will receive a $5 per camp “Early Bloomer” discount. Among the camps offered are My First Camp 2 & 3; Green Sprouts; Green Thumbs; Explorer; Adventurers; Leaders in Training; Yoga Bash; and Discover Dance.

Camp CBG provides exciting and enriching learning experiences for children ages 2-12. The Garden offers weeklong camps with morning, afternoon, and all-day options from June 18 to Aug. 17. Online registration is open through June.

Northbrook Citizens for Drug and Alcohol Awareness invites parents and guardians of toddlers through fifth graders to a new parenting series of classes called “Becoming A Conscious Parent — Tools & Principles for Parenting From Your Heart” presented by Lauren Bondy and Karen Jacobson. The classes will be offered in four two-hour sessions 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 21, 28, March 6 and 13 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1133 Pfingsten Road, Northbrook. Burlington Coat Factory has joined forces with the Foundation for National Institute of Health (FNIH) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) The Heart Truth campaign dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease among women. All locations, including the Glenview Burlington Coat Factory at 2614 Golf Road, are featuring a special section dedicated to red dresses through Easter. For every ladies and girls dress sold, Burlington will donate $1 to the FNIH, up to $25,000, to support The Heart Truth and women’s heart health research and education.

Cityscapes: Portraits of the Second City by Audrey McCartney Barrett, Glenview Resident — through Feb. 28. Cityscapes captures the vitality of Chicago’s neighborhoods and street life. Beginning with photographs, Barrett creates a montage of the very essence and character of a street scene. Audrey then challenges herself to capture the energy, rhythm, and emotional feeling of a place, as well as intriguing architectural forms and embellished facades. A self-taught artist, Glenview Art League member, and multiple award-winner, Barrett’s hope is to engage the viewer and share a moment of connection with her art and Chicago.

Wagner Farm

Historic Wagner Farm, 1510 Wagner Road, provides a unique opportunity for families to learn about our farming heritage and experience first hand “the way things used to be.” The Heritage Center and grounds are open daily. Stop by 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. The Heritage Center features interactive stations, milking parlor, greenhouse, authentic 1930’s store and museum store.

Crafty Calves. Youngsters, ages 3-5 years, and an adult can learn about our farm animals, then make a special animal craft about each one at this monthly program, next offered from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Feb. 22. February’s featured animal is the pig. Advance registration required. The fee is $5.75 per participant for Park District residents and $7.19 for nonresidents. Registration is going on now for Park Center’s Annual Princess Ball. It will be a night to remember for you and your little princess. The annual royal ball for girls, ages 4-12 years, and their special dates, will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 24 or 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave. Lovely gowns, music, dancing and refreshments will enhance the magical atmosphere. Park Center Preschool Registration for the 2012-13 school year is going on now. Pick up a preschool registration packet at the front desk of Park Center. Special Family Swim Hours on President’s Day at Splash Landings. Special lap swim hours are 5:30-11 a.m. and special Family Swim hours are from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. on President’s Day, Feb. 20. Daily admission is just $6. Masters Swim Workouts. Get coaching from a triathlon expert and increase your effectiveness and comfort in the water with this 1000-2500 yard adult swim workout that includes technique drills and interval sets. The Weekly Brick. Drew Surinsky, a USA Triathlon Expert Coach, leads a challenging bike-run workout that’s essential to multisport conditioning. Sessions are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 23 through March 29. Fee for the entire session is $150/residents or $188/nonresidents or pay per class at $30/residents; $37.50/nonresidents.

Smocks and Jocks combo classes. Kids ages 4 to 6 can spend 45 minutes playing sports and games and 45 minutes creating works of arts in these combo classes. Open hockey “Rat Time” 12:15-2 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays. The Glenview Ice Center sets aside one hour and 45 minutes for pick up hockey games. Players must be at least 18 years old and wear full equipment to participate. Admission: $9 or buy a 10-time Rat pass for $80. Goalies play for free!

Freeze Figure Skating Competition. The Glenview Ice Center is proud to host figure skating competitions twice a year, including The Freeze Figure Skating Competition on Feb. 25 and 26. Drop in for Open Skate. The Glenview Ice Center, 1851 Landwehr Road, offers daily open public skating sessions. Open skate is offered from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursday; 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 8:15 to 10 p.m. Friday. Admission is $6.50 weekdays and weekends and $7.50 Friday nights and holidays. Children ages 5 and under skate free when skating with an adult. Skate rental is available for $4.50.

Session III Indoor Tennis Lesson registration for current participants only is going on through Feb. 27. The Grove

The Grove’s Natural Science Classroom is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 1421 Milwaukee Ave.

The Natural Science classroom features hawks and owls as the theme in February. Individuals and families are welcome to discover nature through science equipment, environmental displays, touching tanks, etc.

Bear Facts program for children ages 4-6 and an adult, 10-11 a.m. Feb. 18. Follow bear tracks, feel a bearskin rug and touch some real bear claws and teeth! Advance registration required. The fee is $12 per resident adult-child pair.

Restoration Work Day, Feb. 18. Help the Grove’s restoration team collect seeds and make way for native wildflowers, grasses and trees by removing invasive, non-native plants. Anyone ages 8 and up is welcome. No advance registration necessary. Meet in The Grove’s Interpretive Center at 9 a.m. and bring work gloves if you have them. Please note work parties may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

Decorative Painting 101. Learn the basics using acrylics and other types of brushes in this beginner’s class for adults from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Feb. 25, at The Grove, 1421 Milwaukee Ave. It’s led by Debi Gajewski, a member of The American Society of Decorative Painters. Bring an old shirt or apron to protect your clothing as well as a sack lunch. Meet in The Grove’s Program Barn. The fee is $32.50 for residents and $40.63 for nonresidents and includes all supplies.

Meet the Turtles. The shelled reptiles from The Grove Interpretive Center’s indoor turtle pond are the stars of Turtle Time, from 10 to 11 a.m. March 3. Learn all about turtles in this show and tell, hands-on program for children ages 4-6 with an adult. Turtle races and a trail walk are part of the fun! The cost is $12 per adult-child pair for residents and $15 for nonresident pairs.

Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie/The Tyner Center

Take a Walk on the Wild Side. Find out how life on the prairie has evolved to survive all sorts of winter conditions from 10-11:30 a.m. Feb. 18. Learn different animal tracks and take home a guide to help identify your own backyard visitors. Dress for the weather and wear rugged shoes. Recommended for ages 13 to adult. Advance registration is required. Fee is $8 per resident and $10 for non-residents

The Tyner Interpretive Center, 2400 Compass Road, is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays in February. Exterior exhibits and walking trails through the prairies are open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Nature and Yoga. An 11-week session of Yoga on the Prairie starts from 8 to 9:15 a.m. March 3. Start your weekend off right by practicing yoga amid the tranquil surroundings of a natural landscape. Yoga on the Prairie is for beginners and intermediate-level students, 18 years and older. Advance registration is required. The fee is $180 for residents and $225 for nonresidents.
