The Chicago Botanic Garden

Registration for the 2012 summer day camp programs has begun. In addition to the Chicago Botanic Garden’s weeklong summer day camp, Camp CBG now offers full-day camps (from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) for two weeks for children ages 6-9. Parents who register their children by Feb. 29 will receive a $5 per camp “Early Bloomer” discount. Among the camps offered are My First Camp 2 & 3; Green Sprouts; Green Thumbs; Explorer; Adventurers; Leaders in Training; Yoga Bash; and Discover Dance.

Three Friends of Winter, a silhouette bonsai show, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 27-29. The program will feature a bonsai display, an interpreted display of the “Three Friends of Winter,” family activities and lectures.

Camp CBG provides exciting and enriching learning experiences for children ages 2-12. The Garden offers weeklong camps with morning, afternoon, and all-day options from June 18 to Aug. 17. Online registration is open through June.

Cityscapes: Portraits of the Second City by Audrey McCartney Barrett, Glenview Resident — through Feb. 28. Cityscapes captures the vitality of Chicago’s neighborhoods and street life. Beginning with photographs, Barrett creates a montage of the very essence and character of a street scene. Audrey then challenges herself to capture the energy, rhythm, and emotional feeling of a place, as well as intriguing architectural forms and embellished facades. A self-taught artist, Glenview Art League member, and multiple award-winner, Barrett’s hope is to engage the viewer and share a moment of connection with her art and Chicago.

“Keeping Healthy: A Prevention Plan for Adults” — 7-8 p.m. Jan. 19. Anne Middaugh RN, MSN, NorthShore University HealthSystem, will present an educational workshop on maintaining good health through prevention. Summer 2012 Camp registration is going on now. Exciting new additions this year’s camps include Early Bird registration prices, families can extend their child’s camp day with Before and After Camp Care option with one centralized drop-off and pick-up location, and new lunch delivery service option available for select camps to take the worry out of packing a lunch for campers each day. New camps this year include a cutting-edge total athletic training Junior Golf Camp at Glenview National 9 Golf Club and Glenbrook South High School science camps. All park district summer camps are non-lottery; sign up is on a first come, first-served basis. Priority registration for Glenview Park District residents ends on Jan. 22. Glenview Youth Baseball 2012 Online Registration Now Open. Glenview Youth Baseball offers leagues for boys & girls, grades K-8, with T-ball for kindergarteners and coaches’ pitching for 1st graders. Open Public Ice Skating Every Day of the Week. Winter calls for ice skating! If it is a little too brisk to skate at one of the park district’s outdoor rinks, head over to one of the daily open public skating sessions at the Glenview Ice Center. Open skate is offered from noon-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday; from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday & Thursday; from 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday & Sunday; and from 8:15-10 p.m. Friday. Admission is $6.50 weekdays & weekends and $7.50 for Friday nights and holidays. Children ages 5 and younger skate free when skating with and adult. Skate rentals are available for $4.50.

Open hockey “Rat Time” 12:15-2 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays . The Glenview Ice Center sets aside one hour and 45 minutes for pick up hockey games. Players must be at least 18 years old and wear full equipment to participate. Admission: $9 or buy a 10-time Rat pass for $80. Goalies play for free!

The Grove

The Grove’s Natural Science Classroom is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 1421 Milwaukee Ave.

The Natural Science classroom features mammals as the theme in January. Individuals and families are welcome to discover nature through science equipment, environmental displays, touching tanks, etc.

GSI-Grove Scene Investigations, 10-11:30 a.m. Jan. 22. Something has gone missing and we need your help to find the culprit. Become a nature detective and uncover clues to solve the case while learning about some of the animals that live at The Grove. Recommended for ages 5 to adult. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration required. The fee is $8 for park district residents and $10 for nonresidents.

Restoration Work Day, Jan. 21. Help the Grove’s restoration team collect seeds and make way for native wildflowers, grasses and trees by removing invasive, non-native plants. Anyone ages 8 and up is welcome. No advance registration necessary. Meet in The Grove’s Interpretive Center at 9 a.m. and bring work gloves if you have them. Please note work parties may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

Get Hooked on Hooking, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 4. Re-discover the craft of hand hooking rugs, the sister art of quilting, using strips of wool fabrics and a crochet style hook to create a beautiful accent piece. Recommended for ages 16 and up. Advance registration required. The fee is $35 for park district residents and $43.75 for nonresidents.

Prairie/Tyner Center

The Interpretive Center is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays in January. Exterior exhibits and walking trails through the prairies are open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Remarkable Raptors for kids ages 4-6 and adults, 10-11:30 a.m. Jan. 28. Have you ever seen a hawk or an owl in your backyard? Learn what raptors are, how to look for signs of them in your backyard and why they are so important to our ecosystem. Includes a short trail walk and a craft. The resident fee is $12/parent-child pair and $15/pair for nonresidents. Additional children may be added for $6/$7.50 per child.
