Up for some religious humor on a Saturday night?
Glenview residents could stay locally April 14 for Chicago stage-worthy theatre at Glenview St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church, where the Women’s Club hosted Late Nite Catechism humor, snacks, desserts and a silent auction/raffle in the gym.
“Get yourself a couple of good seats and enjoy it,” said Virginia Neiween, a Glenview resident since 1961, who welcomed guests, collecting tickets. “I’ve learned to laugh at the little foibles that we had when we grew up and went to catechism class.“It’s (the play) very funny,” said Neiween.
An estimated turnout of 225 people enjoyed the show written by Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan, featuring Liz Cloud. A little over $10,000 was raised at the event.
In the audience before the performance was no sister act but a real daddy, daughter bonding moment. Nanette Fraser of Lindenhurst sat next to her father Dick Hennig, a 25-year Glenview resident. “We are bonding,” said Hennig, with a smile. “She (his daughter Nanette) was an acting major at U of I (University of Illinois) and she likes to watch theatre productions.” Said Nanette Fraser: “He’s (her father) been taking me to different productions since I was eight or seven. Fraser, who has an 18 month old daughter Evangelina, was grateful for the opportunity for a well-deserved night out with her father. Fraser also acknowledged her dad for taking her during her youth to see “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.
Of Glenview St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church and its mission: “I belong to the women’s club,” said Christina Tan, “so it helps me to get to know people and to grow closer to God together as a community.”
Said Debbie Hoppe, who came from the northwest side of Chicago with her husband Alan: “Oh, I mean, if you’re Catholic, you just have to see this show because it is so great.” Hoppe, also of Pioneer Press, was impressed with the outpouring of fundraiser support on this Late Nite Catechism evening. “It’s a friendly parish,” she said.
When the show began, Lovey Lehman welcomed guests via microphone. “Pay attention,” Lehman said, smiling. “It’s the best way to get a good grade.”
