Civic Award nominations

For a 45th year, citizens and public employees who made a difference in Glenview will be honored with a Glenview Civic Award.

But first, the Glenview Civic Awards Committee has to find out who are deserving of the tribute because of their actions in 2011.

The committee is seeking nominations in four categories: Citizen of the Year (must live or work in Glenview); Youth of the Year (must be a Glenview resident in high school); Public Safety Award (must be a Village police officer, firefighter or paramedic); and Public Service Award (must have given direct support to public authorities).

Nominations are due by 3 p.m. March 13, at the Glenview Police Department, 2500 E. Lake Ave. Forms can be obtained by calling Sandie Elliott at (847) 901-6100 or online at www.glenview.il.us under “Useful links.”

A representative from each of the nine Glenview organizations sponsoring the event will participate in a selection committee to choose the honorees. Those groups are: American Legion Post 166, Glenview Women of Today, Kiwanis Club of Glenview/Northbrook, Lions, Navy League — Glenview Council, Optimist, Rotary — Luncheon, Rotary — Sunrise and the Glenview Chamber of Commerce.

The 45th annual Glenview Civic Awards dinner will be held April 20, at the North Shore Country Club, 1340 Glenview Road. A reception from 6 to 6:45 p.m. will be followed by dinner, entertainment and the awards ceremony.

Dinner reservations can be made with Sandie Elliott at (847) 901-6100. Entrée selection is a choice of chicken or fish at $40 per person. Arrangements may be made to reserve a table. Overall seating is limited to 200.

The Glenview Civic Awards has been a highlight event in Glenview since 1967.

League to host candidate debates

The League of Women Voters of Deerfield, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park and Lake Forest/Lake Bluff will be holding public candidate debates for the Illinois House District 58, Illinois Senate District 29, and the 10th Congressional District races on Feb. 26. The debates will take place at the Highland Park Country Club, Highland Park. Only opposed races will have debates. The debates are being cosponsored by the Union League Club of Chicago and will be taped by Lake Forest T.V. for rebroadcast by the various local community networks.

Below is the schedule for the debates:

1 p.m. — Illinois House District 58, Republican Primary Candidates, Mark G. Neerhof and Lauren G. Turelli; 2 p.m. — Illinois Senate District 29, Democratic Primary Candidates, Julie Morrison and Milton J. Sumption; 3 p.m. — 10th Congressional District, Democratic Primary Candidates, Vivek Bavda, Aloys Rutagwibira, Brad Schneider, Llya Sheyman and John Tree.

The public will be able to submit written questions for the candidates at the forum.

The League of Women Voters, a national nonpartisan political organization dedicated to promoting the active and informed participation of citizens in government, sponsors this event as a service to the community. The League of Women Voters neither endorses nor opposes candidates for public office.

Blades nab top prizes

The Glenview Ice Center’s synchronized skiating teas, The Mini Blades and the Junior Blades, swept the competition Feb. 10-12 at the Sweetheart Open, winning first place in their respective divisions. the competition took place at the Niles Park District’s IceLand Skate Complex.

The Mini Blades gave a dynamic performance based on their theme of “vacation.” The team features 16 skaters: Paige Arvanitis, Meghan Blomberg, Peyton Bond, Sarah Church, Alexandra Libman, Samantha Libman, Caroline Lommer, Catherine Nowak, Ngozi Okoli, Delaney Rossi. Lilly Rossi, Audrey Sarasin, Anna Shabelman, Lily Smith, Marla Tamul, and Allison Vogelmeier. They are coached by Kristy Lohre and Maria Scianna. .

The Junior Team skated an upbeat and very challenging program set to music that reflects their theme of “Paris.” The team is coached by Tracy Blomquist, Tera Hoffman and Marcia Rohrer. The team members are Rachel Barda, Madison Blinick, Katherine Borg, Isabella Duan, Gina Fiorentino, Katherine Hinrichs, Olivia Johnson, Peyton LaValley, McKenzie Liboy, Rachel Luo, Christina Moy, Emily Murdach, Julia Niklewicz, Ngozi Okoli, Katie Roberts, and Alexis Schlau.

The Glenview Blades will be exhibiting their routines on Feb. 25 during the Freeze competition hosted by the Glenview Ice Center, 1851 Landwehr Road, Glenview. Cheer them on as they prepare for the Ice Skating Institute’s District 8 Championships and the National Synchronized Championships, March 30-April 1 in St. Louis.

The Freeze will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 and 26, and the public is invited to watch free of charge. Eleven synchronized skating teams and over 320 individual skaters are set to compete in this US Basic Skills event which is designed to promote a fun introductory experience for beginners with limited competition experience. A number of students from the Glenview Ice Center’s Basic Skills instructional program will represent Glenview. They are Juliana Abraham, Danielle Baffa, Rachel Barda, Daisy Belofsky, Peyton Bond, Sarah Church, Frankie Crist, Gabrielle Feygin, Suzanne Harms, Alison Krolopp, Jasmin Lee, McKenzie Liboy, Caroline Lommer, Emily Murdach, Audrey Sarasin, Emilia Scott, Marla Tamul, Morgan Trauscht, Rachael Veselsky and Lauren Weiss.

Last days for Character Counts! application

Friday is the last day to submit an entry in the Character Counts! writing contest, now in its 50th year.

The contest is open to fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Entrants must choose a person who she or he admires, and write an essay about why the person should be admired and how the person sets a good example, illustrating one of the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Entries must be 350 words or less, with name, address, phone number, grade and school in the upper right hand corner of each page. The entry must be given to the language arts or classroom teacher at the student’s school by Friday, or turned in by that day to Barbara Littlefield at the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road.

All entries will be judged by professional writers. Winners, first, second and third place for each grade level, will be announced in early April and honored at a village board meeting. The Glenview Announcements will publish the first-place entries for each grade.

FootPrint Fund Awards

For the fifth consecutive year, Allegra Print Design & Signs, will sponsor the $10,000 FootPrint Fund Awards which awards grants to deserving community non-profit organizations.

The value of the services ranges from $200 to a maximum value of $1000 per organization for the award year. Services include graphic design, printing, copying, bindery and thanks to Allegra’s latest addition to services, Signs.

Applicants for grants should meet one of the following criteria: Service expansion — use of print services to contribute to expanding an organization’s awareness or existing service projects; program enhancements — use of print service to promote new programs or projects; leveraged efforts — use of print services to increase the impact of other existing resources.
