GLENVIEW — Village trustees approved construction contracts Tuesday night to begin connecting Old Willow Road to Patriot Boulevard.

The project starts this week to provide a detour around nearby Shermer Road where a fatal July 4 train derailment destroyed the viaduct, killing two people.

Union Pacific Railroad will pay nearly $750,000 for the extended road and traffic signals, while the village will pay $10,000.

Installation of a temporary traffic signal began last week at Shermer Road and West Lake Avenue on the Glenview\Northbrook border.

West of The Glen, the red lights will improve traffic flow on Shermer Road while UP rebuilds the bridge at a cost of up to $57,000.
