Farkas’ petition for District 34 ruled invalid

GLENVIEW — The Electoral Board for School District 34 voted to remove a Glenview resident from running for school trustee in April.

On Jan. 24 the three-member Electoral Board said Glenn Farkas did not fasten together his nominating petition under state law.

School Board members Julie Schechtman and Sue Ellen Bohae Galligan and Dawn Scaramuzza, School Board secretary, declared Farkas’ petition was invalid.

An objection was raised against resident Jennifer Feibig, but she withdrew her name from the ballot before the public hearing at the District 34 Administration Building.

Another objection regarding Farkas was whether 34 of 50 signatures on his petition were valid.

After the Cook County Clerk’s Office examined the signatures on Jan. 16, the objection was withdrawn.

The objector to Farkas’ candidacy was Martha O’Connell, a member of the District 34 Caucus.

The caucus has endorsed incumbent Board President Chris Northwick and incumbent board members John “Jack” Murphy and Catherine Russe.

After the meeting, Farkas said Monday he had five days to appeal the Electoral Board’s decision.

“This is pretty sad and disturbing that I was taken off the ballot. I’m active in the community and I have two children in District 34,” said Farkas.

Farkas ran and lost against Illinois State Sen. Daniel Biss, (D-9th), in November.

He said the board’s decision was partisan because two members — Schechtman and Galligan — serve on the 34 School Board.

“I have no respect for the caucus. This is just wrong. In the court of public opinion, people have said this is ridiculous. This is not over.”
