Children invited to make matzah at Whole Foods Sunday
Children are invited to participate Sunday in a hands-on pre-Passover experience at a model matzah factory that will set up at Whole Foods Market in Northbrook.
At 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., the children will re-enact the process of manufacturing matzoh from grinding the flour to kneading the dough, to baking the matzahs on a stone oven – and all within 18 minutes – the time in which matzoh must be made.
Chabad Rabbi Meir Moscowitz, director of the Lubavitch Chabad of Northbrook, will facilitate the interactive program at 840 Willow Road.
The event is free and open to the general public. Make reservations by calling (847) 564-8770 or visiting info@chabadnorthbrook.com .
It is critical to note that the matzah produced at the model matzoh factory is not to be used on Passover, actual Passover matzoh needs to be manufactured in a highly controlled environment to ensure that it does not become leavened, Moscowitz said.
Sample hand-made matzah for Passover will be available, he added.
On the first two nights of the holiday, a Seder is held to commemorate the liberation from Egypt of the Jewish people. Seder requirements include consuming matzah, four cups of wine and bitter herbs, as well as recounting the exodus story.
