Blue skies and sunny weather brought smiles to the faces of festival goers and businesses at the Glenview Summer Festival last Saturday in downtown Glenview.

Organizers estimate between 12,000 to 18,000 people attended the one-day event, making it one of the better attended festival in recent years.

“It was a good strong crowd, from beginning to end,” said Jim Martin, event chairman of the Glenview Summer Festival. “It wasn’t our biggest crowd ever but it was steady all day long. It’s the best weather we’ve had for the festival in five years and it led to a good event from opening to closing.”

Martin said 116 businesses participated in this year’s festival and street sale. A car show featuring about 65 vintage and antique cars was a very popular attraction of the festival, which also featured a disc jockey and a beer and beverage garden. There were also a variety of activities for children, including a basketball hoop trailer, a balloon dart toss game, as well as fire truck and equipment demonstrations by the Glenview Fire Department.

And, of course, there was plenty of food for festival goers to choose from.

Hackney’s on Lake Street was selling hamburgers, hot dogs, onion loaf and chicken breast sandwiches, according to Jeff Frystak, general manager of Hackney’s.

“It was the busiest year in three years,” he said. “Our sales were up 50 percent over last year. I think the weather had a lot to do with it. It was a gorgeous day.”

Frystak said hamburgers were by far the most popular item, estimating that they sold between 400 to 500 burgers over the course of the day.

Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook, which also had a booth at the festival, sold hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks at the event.

“We had a lot of people stop by. We were busy the whole time,” said Nancy Bloom, executive director of Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook. “We sold out of hot dogs so we were pretty busy.”

Bloom said their organization also hosted a bean bag “frog toss” game that was very popular among kids.

The festival is sponsored by the Glenview Chamber of Commerce and proceeds raised from the event will go to support Chamber activities, according to Martin.
