Glenview women nabbed with heroin in Wilmette

WILMETTE—Two Glenview women face felony drug charges after a police officer found them parked Tuesday behind the Wilmette Dairy Queen on Lake Avenue, one of them shooting up heroin.
Jessica Johnson, 20, 1736 Wildberry Lane, and Katherine Karls, 24, of 1420 Pendleton Lane, are scheduled to appear Oct. 23 in Cook County Court in Skokie.
Johnson was charged with two felony counts of possessing a controlled substance and one misdemeanor charge of possessing drug paraphernalia. Police charged Karls with one felony count of possession, and two misdemeanor paraphernalis counts.
Both are still in custody on $75,000 bonds.
Wilmette Police Cmdr. Patrick Collins said an officer was called to the Dairy Queen, 3510 Lake Ave., shortly after 1:30 p.m. Oct. 16, to check a witness report of two women using syringes in a black car parked behind the store.
When he arrived, he watched Johnson, the passenger, inject herself with something. Collins said he arrested Johnson and Karls, the driver. He and other officers on the scene found a filled syringe in the car, a residue-covered spoon and five foil packets of suspected heroin, along with two empty syringes that Karls was carrying. The packet and syringe contents tested positive as heroin.
According to police, Karls said she had to pull the car over because Johnson “just had to have a hit.” Johnson reportedly told officers she wanted one more hit before checking in to a drug rehab program.
