Green light for expansion of Glenview’s Grandpa’s Place

Grandpa’s Place in downtown Glenview received the go-ahead Tuesday to expand indoor seating with a new lower bar. The well-known sports bar and grill at 1868 Prairie St. also will add to the second story a 25-seat family meeting room and office space for the owner. An Americans with Disabilities Act compliant elevator will connect the two floors. A rooftop deck will be included and room will be made for a temporary tent, which will be used for permitted activities. The Plan Commission also approved the project 4-0 April 24. Glenview crash between truck, van injures two

At 3:30 p.m. today, Glenview police and fire responders were at Willow and Landwehr roads to assist in a two-vehicle accident with injuries. Bystanders said a dump truck traveling east on Willow Road broadsided a Toyota Sienna van that was heading south on Landwehr Road. A man said two people were in the van were transported by ambulances. Rush hour traffic on Willow Road was backed up to Shermer Road. We will update this story when we have more information. …

Grant will buy 200 iPads for District 34 students

A sizeable grant will put more fingertip learning devices into the hands of students at Glenview School District 34. The Glenview Education Foundation recently gave the district $100,000 to buy 200 Apple iPads for students in the 2012-13 school year. The handheld devices could be distributed to mostly intermediate-age students for “one-to-one” learning. Brian Engle, district executive director of educational technology, said the expanded computer program will emphasize more individualized learning with iPads. “The fingertip portability of these devices allows for learning at home, so learning does not stop just at school,” he said, adding teachers also can monitor how …

Hlavacek Florist of Glenview found a way to connect Mother’s Day and the spring wedding season. And it’s not a stretch. While ordering flowers for the day devoted to moms, customers saw wedding dresses dating back to the 1930s in the shop’s front window display. In all, seven white wedding gowns have been arranged and will remain until late June. “Every child dresses for their wedding day in hopes of becoming a mother,” said Maria Woltmann, who for 12 years has owned Hlavacek Florist at 1444 Waukegan Road in Carillon Square. “This ties it all together,” she said. Fenwick student at heart of IHSA lawsuit

The Illinois High School Association girls state track and field meet will be held this weekend in Charleston, Ill., — and Fenwick’s Mary Kate Callahan won’t be taking part. But a lawsuit to be filed Wednesday by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan in federal court aims to make it possible for student-athletes with disabilities, like Callahan who is paralyzed from the waist down, to compete in future IHSA state meets. The suit asks for an injunction ordering the IHSA “to cease unlawful discrimination against athletes with disabilities” and to create more opportunities for athletes with disabilities by setting state-qualifying standards …
