As UPS courier Brandon Zickler can tell you, walk into Ronald J. Borden & Company Ltd.’s office and the first thing you’ll see is a smile. The smile belongs to Glenview resident Debbie Jordan, who greeted Zickler during a recent Friday stop there and smoothly took the touch-screen register from him to sign. “I am administrative and do just about everything to keep the firm running smoothly,” said Jordan. America International Exchange, a Chicago-area non-profit, is looking for families on the North Shore to host each of its high-school-aged visitors from Spain. This year’s students will be here July 27-Aug. 18. The students speak English, are insured, and have their own spending money. All they need is a warm bed, meals, and a window to the American way-of-life. It is not necessary to have teens in the family; singles, young families; and seniors also make great host families. Two Maple School student musicians in Northbrook are hoping a classmate will lead them to another winning experience at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Ellie Kim and Sarah Chin are members a string ensemble that in April won the Illinois Grand Prize in Chicago with Sue Hong as first-chair leader. The Village of Glenview and members of the Joseph M. Sesterhenn American Legion Post 166 will sponsor the annual Glenview Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony that traditionally honors deceased soldiers from the community. Cmdr. Veteran Jack Shine flew steady in service years

For Glenview resident John “Jack” Shine, serving the public was simply what men in his family did. His father, after whom he is named, worked an undercover beat with the Chicago Police Department. Shine’s brother served in the Air Force before following in dad’s shoes to become a city cop. Shine, now 89, put in his time, too, as he flew with the Marines for 40 years. The retired colonel enlisted in the service in 1942 with a close friend from Palos Park, whom he still gets together with today. After being stateside for several years, Shine received orders to …

Attea Middle School band members took part in the Spring Band Concert May 16 at the school. Band director Allison Reatherford led the concert and symphonic bands and the wind ensemble. Hileman’s cost-saving plan gaining notice

While suburban governments were cutting budgets the last three years in a bleak economy, Glenview’s top administrator found a way to cut costs, but not services. In doing so, Village Manager Todd Hileman, introduced a solution last year — the Municipal Partnering Initiative — a group of 22 nearby villages bidding for public works projects as one unit with more buying power to save public money. House Violence Against Women Act: Voting 222 for and 205 against, the House on May 16 approved a Republican bill (HR 4970) to renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) through fiscal 2016 on a budget of $680 million annually. The bill was disputed mainly because it omits provisions in a bi-partisan Senate-passed bill to expand protections for battered women who are illegal immigrants, Native American women who are assaulted on reservations by non-Indians and gays, lesbians and transsexuals. “Life Guard” robber hits fourth North Shore store

A robber has threatened four sales clerks with a knife and demanded money in stores in Glenview, Northfield and Winnetka last week. The Winnetka Police Department released two composite sketches of the suspect who took money from three of the shops he targeted. The most recent robbery was Friday afternoon at Creme de la Creme in the Hubbard Woods business district in Winnetka.
