The District 30 Caucus is endorsing Ursula Sedlak, Fred Sloneker and Ken Spero (incumbent) as candidates for the April 9th School Board election. The District 30 Caucus members have a vested interest in selecting the best candidates for the Board as each Caucus member has at least one child attending either Maple, Wescott or Willowbrook schools. The Caucus members interviewed many District 30 Board candidates and after lengthy discussions we decided that Sedlak, Sloneker and Spero would best represent District 30. These three candidates each have children attending District 30 schools, they are well known within the community and possess … ]]> Mon, 15 Apr 2013 10:14:18 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/18782034-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/18782034-474/letters-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ Letters to the Editor ]]>

Information on Chicagoland Young Widowed Connection (CYWC) We are writing about the article, “Young widows give each other vital support”, which was printed in the Feb. 14, 2013 issue of Pioneer Press. As a new organization, we greatly appreciate the attention Pioneer Press has brought to our cause as we try to get the word out to local young widowed men and women. So that Pioneer Press readers have the most accurate information, we would like to clarify a few items that appeared in the article. Chicagoland Young Widowed Connection (CYWC) was formed in 2011 in order to bring together, … ]]> Wed, 06 Mar 2013 17:08:00 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/18489118-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/18489118-474/letters-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ Letter: Cat Grandma to the rescue ]]>

To the Grey Lantern: Call me Cat Grandma. I am a super hero, too. As Cat Grandma, I bring wrongs to right. You know the texting fool in front of you who doesn’t move when the light turns green? I, Cat Grandma, am the one who uses her horn to get the line moving. Surely you are aware of people who lose their doggy’s doo on a neighbor’s lawn. I, Cat Grandma, return it to the owner’s front porch. Yes, I admit it, I’m partial to kitties, so when dogs roam the forest preserve bike trail unleashed, I confront the … ]]> Wed, 03 Apr 2013 19:08:45 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/15003607-474/letter-cat-grandma-to-the-rescue.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/15003607-474/letter-cat-grandma-to-the-rescue.html <![CDATA[ Letters to the Editor ]]>

It takes a village Like most parents we have experienced many emotions while parenting our children, but this year is prompting us to be more emotional and thus more reflective for a variety of reasons. It is also the reason we are compelled to share a thought or two with you; you being the family, friends, and even acquaintances that have walked alongside of us. We believe it really does take a village to raise a child! So, if you were, or are; a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, a friend, the parent of a friend, a teacher, … ]]> Wed, 03 Oct 2012 16:46:32 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/14460783-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/14460783-474/letters-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ Letters to the Editor ]]>

Voting Rights Act This week marks the 47th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act, which outlawed discrimination in voting and has been instrumental in ensuring citizens’ voting rights are protected from nefarious state election laws. Instead of celebrating, we have watched attempts to undermine this vital law in states across the country. Voter photo ID laws were considered in 34 states in 2011 alone and it is estimated that 11 percent of the population does not have the type of identification required by many of these laws. Especially impacted are the elderly, people with disabilities, low-income voters … ]]> Mon, 10 Sep 2012 12:51:09 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/14288698-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/14288698-474/letters-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ Letters to the Editor ]]>

Thanks Glenview! The 39th annual Glenview Chamber of Commerce Summer Fest was a great success in spite of the heat! On behalf of the Chamber, I want to thank those who helped make the event special again this year. Kudos to our wonderful Glenview residents and those from our surrounding communities, who came out in droves to enjoy the family entertainment, great food and wonderful wares offered by our wide variety of vendors. Once again the Glenview Police Department insured the safety of our attendees, vendors and volunteers as we prepared for and participated in the Fest. I am disappointed to learn a circus with wild animals, including elephants (an endangered species), is scheduled to return to Wilmette, the only North Shore community that still hosts this kind of event. Increasingly, small towns, cities, and countries are banning wild animal performances, due to concerns about safety and animal welfare. All circus trainers use the same methods to train elephants and other wild animals. The tap from the elephant trainer’s “bullhook” reminds the elephant of past training terrors. Elephants are hit repeatedly with multiple weapons and are chained immobile for long periods to break their spirit and make … ]]> Sun, 22 Jul 2012 06:25:42 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/13190801-474/circus-shouldnt-run.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/13190801-474/circus-shouldnt-run.html <![CDATA[ Willow Road project could mar Winnetka’s Burnham Cabin ]]>

The picturesque view of the Burnham Cabin, nestled in the meadow of Crow Island Woods, may be obstructed from Willow Road drivers, based on a road project in the works. At a hearing last week village official confirmed that plans call for new roadside parking to be carved out along Willow Road in front of the Crow Island meadow for use by staff of the nearby Crow Island school. Crow Island School has millions in reserve for special projects, and sits on five acres of land, however the school wants the village to pay for parking to be created on … ]]> Sun, 22 Jul 2012 06:25:01 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/13188057-474/willow-road-project-could-mar-winnetkas-burnham-cabin.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/13188057-474/willow-road-project-could-mar-winnetkas-burnham-cabin.html <![CDATA[ Guest Essay: Efforts to end bullying ]]>

Efforts to end bullying Meredith Falk is the New Trier High School Student Senate secretary Throughout the week of March 12, New Trier’s Freshman Student Senate sponsored a completely student-led Anti-Bullying week as a follow up to the annual “Names” program. Back in December when “Names” visited New Trier, students discussed bullying issues ranging from seemingly playful but verbal abuse to LGBT harassment. However, the main focus was to help students accept and embrace others’ differences. Advisers encouraged their advisees to “lower the iceberg,” or see past their peers’ differences to their incredible uniqueness and talents, possibly masked by labels … ]]> Mon, 07 May 2012 09:54:01 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/12155510-474/guest-essay-efforts-to-end-bullying.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/12155510-474/guest-essay-efforts-to-end-bullying.html <![CDATA[ letters to the editor ]]>

A library without a piano? Recently, before attending a musical event at the new Glenview library, I asked, “Where is the piano?” I was advised by a staff director, “there is no room for a piano.” After discussing this disappointing news with many library supporters, it’s evident we made a huge assumption. The old, smaller, torn-down library had ample room for a piano. Hopefully, this building design was an oversight and not “a sin of omission.” Musical performers are surprised when informed they need to provide their own portable keyboards when entertaining. Every neighboring library of Glenview has space for … ]]> Mon, 04 Jun 2012 10:47:48 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/12227344-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/12227344-474/letters-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ Letter to the editor ]]>

Schakowsky serves well We have lived in Glenview for over 50 years. Back in the 1950s, we had as our congressional representative a Republican conservative from Park Ridge. He never came close to agreeing with our Judeo-Christian values and beliefs. We started helping to change that when we began working for Abner Mikva and he became our congressional representative. He served us well, with no scandal detracting from his record. We continued working for Sydney Yates, yet not with quite the enthusiasm. Then when I was on the board of the Lake Street Church Homeless Center in Evanston, Louise heard … ]]> Tue, 24 Apr 2012 15:39:34 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/11673703-474/letter-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/11673703-474/letter-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ letters to the editor ]]>

District 34 budget cuts When my husband was relocated from England over 7 years ago we needed to find a house near to Chicago. We chose Glenview because of its reputable school system. I wonder, if these proposals were to go ahead, whether a realtor would be recommending this area so heartily to another new family. I am aware that cuts need to be made during this difficult time, however I feel that many of the proposals, initial and additional, need to be reviewed more carefully. I write as both a concerned parent, wanting the best education for my children, … ]]> Tue, 24 Apr 2012 12:39:00 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/11082800-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/11082800-474/letters-to-the-editor.html <![CDATA[ A special day of service ]]>

The Kindness Connection and The Volunteer Center would like to thank the nearly 400 participants who attended our Martin Luther King Day of Service on Jan. 16. Together, the enormous crowd made the day off a day “on” in service to those facing crises in their lives. The group produced over 1,000 lovingly made goods for ten nonprofits and their clients, including: Project Linus, Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, Connections for the Homeless, The Night Ministry, NorthShore University HealthSystem, Orphans of the Storm, Heartland Animal Shelter, New Trier Food Pantry, Hines VA Hospital, and various nursing homes. Northbrook is an urban area, not agricultural Can you believe it? The village trustees are considering letting people raise chickens in Northbrook. What’s next goats and sheep? One trustee said, “I think there is a movement in this country to have local food and to have sustainable food, and I think that we should at least look at it.” Perhaps the Landmark Inn would like to put a few head of cattle in their parking lot, they could advertise locally grown hamburgers (local food). The coyotes which have been seen more and more in Northbrook wouldn’t mind a chicken dinner … ]]> Mon, 27 Feb 2012 08:30:21 -0500 http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/10186037-474/letters-to-the-editor.html http://glenview.suntimes.com/opinions/letters/10186037-474/letters-to-the-editor.html
