Loyola relay satisfied, excited about future

CHARLESTON — One would figure that the most pressure-packed day of the track season would have been Saturday’s state finals, where the state’s fastest runners competed for all-state honors. But that wasn’t the case for Loyola’s 4x800-meter relay team. All four members of that relay — juniors Jackie McDonnell and Sarah Kelley, sophomores Caroline Zaworski and Claire Monticello — agreed that the Class 3A state preliminaries on May 17 carried a much greater significance to them. “Our real goal was to just make it to finals, and once we did that was just a huge relief for us,” McDonnell said. …

Cal Callahan and Jack Penn are best friends. They also are junior teammates and starting attackers on the Loyola boys lacrosse team. On the golf course, though, they are opponents. In two rounds at North Shore Country Club, Callahan owns a 2-0 record against Penn through last weekend. “We go back and forth, but I win at the end,” Callahan said. “But he knows how to get inside my head, which isn’t good for me.” That happens when two people have been close since kindergarten. GLENVIEW — Loyola and New Trier each moved one step closer to a rematch of last season’s girls lacrosse state final by winning their respective supersectional games Wednesday at Loyola’s Glenview campus. The top-seeded Ramblers had no trouble with Libertyville, earning a 23-5 win, while the second-seeded Trevians fought off a determined Glenbrook South for their 20-9 victory. MUNDELEIN — It took 361 days, but Buffalo Grove’s girls soccer team got its payback. After losing to Glenbrook South in a Class 3A sectional final match on May 25 last year, the Bison got their rematch Tuesday afternoon in the Mundelein Sectional semifinals. They dominated possession, and after struggling to convert chances early, scored twice over a five-minute span in the second half to beat Glenbrook South 3-1 and snap the Titans’ 16-game unbeaten streak. Maine South alumna Emily Epifanio, a senior catcher on the Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team, was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region first team. Epifanio started 37 of the team’s 39 games and hit .382 with a .488 on-base percentage and a .588 slugging percentage. She finished her career with 27 home runs, the third most in program history. She also received Whitewater’s Position Player of the Week honor on April 29 after an impressive six-game stretch: The Park Ridge native hit .467 (7-for-15) and helped the Warhawks to a 5-1 record. It was the first time this season that senior all-state runners Courtney Ackerman and Jessica Ackerman had run on the same 4x800 relay. Evanston junior Parker English qualified for the Class 3A girls track and field state finals in all four of her events and shined in her two races Friday, posting the fastest time in the 400-meter run and the second-fastest time in the 200.
