A day after beating Evanston 49-41, Steve Weissenstein went to watch Niles West play Young.
The Glenbrook South coach marveled at how both team’s finished shots, especially in the lane. Weissenstein hopes the Titans can be that type of team by the time the postseason rolls around.
“I think we are playing better offensively, but we still are leaving points on the floor,” he said. “The biggest thing about Niles West and Young was that they don’t do that.
“Until we get to that point, we are not going to reach that level. But we have the girls capable of doing that.”
Friday’s game was the 12th this season the No. 20-ranked Titans scored fewer than 50 points. But because the team’s defense is so good, they have been able to get away with an average offense so far.
Weissenstein knows that won’t be the case in the state playoffs.
“We’ve been really good defensively all year,” said the coach, who reported opponents are shooting around 30 percent against the Titans. “Offensively, though, we have a lot of room to improve.”
Colleen McDonagh led Glenbrook South with 17 points in the win over the Wildkits. Sister Molly McDonagh added 12 points. It was the second time Glenbrook South beat Evanston this season.
“They are very talented and play very good defense, so I am very happy to have beaten them twice,” said Weissenstein, whose team entered this week 15-4 overall and 4-2 in the CSL South, one game behind both Maine South and Niles West.
Glenbrook South plays Waukegan on Friday and Morgan Park on Saturday. The Titans then take on Libertyville on Monday.
“We have a tough string of games ahead,” Weissenstein said. “Waukegan is much better, and Morgan Park is very good. Other than Young, they probably are the best team in the city.”
