Boys Basketball: Spandiary, Saxons hit Titans hard early

Schaumburg used a lock-down defense and a well-disciplined offense to grab their 16th win of the season.

The MSL West-leading Saxons (16-5) took advantage of a big first-half effort against Glenbrook South (5-15) to collect the 55-34 victory in Tuesday night’s nonconference game in Glenview.

“We came out with a lot of intensity and we executed our offense,” said senior forward Christian Spandiary. “We got our stops on defense too; we came out with eight stops in the first and that was a key to the whole game.”

Schaumburg did not allow the Titans easy access to the lane and on very few occasions allowed them to penetrate on the dribble.

“We pride ourselves on defense,” Spandiary said. “We always play step-up drills and we always have defensive drills in practice so we just have to execute that.”

The Saxons sprinted out to a quick 11-0 lead in the first quarter on the shoulders of Spandiary, who led the team with 11 points before the half.

The Titans made a small push at the beginning of the second frame with two quick baskets, but would not be within seven points before the halftime score read 29-14.

The second half brought more of the same as both coaches went to their benches.

Schaumburg junior forward Kevin Curnow proved to be an asset as he scored his team’s final 12 points.

“He’s a great player,” said Spandiary. “In practice, he always gives us a good look and he’s just a great overall player.”

Junior guard Kyle Bolger finished with 11 points and two steals and junior center Jimmy Lundquist ended with eight points and two blocks.

For Glenbrook South, junior guard Justin Busiel led the Titans with eight points, while senior forward Victor Levi added four points and two boards.
