Jon Salomon watched his brother swim for Maine South and compete at the state meet multiple times.
After surviving the sectional cut Saturday, the Glenbrook South freshman is off a better start than Andrew, who earned his first trip as a sophomore.
“I’m really, really happy and excited,” said Jon Salomon, who helped the Titans kick off the meet at Glenbrook North in spectacular fashion. “(Saturday) was about making it. Hopefully, we will go faster next week.”
Salomon and the Titans started off the afternoon by winning the 200-yard medley relay and breaking the pool record with a time of 1:35.62.
Thomas Pollick chased down Conant’s Alex Shozda on the freestyle anchor leg to pull out the victory.
“I knew where he was, and I knew I was catching up to him,” said Pollick.
Glenbrook South’s foursome — Ryan Hianik, Ryan Brander, Salomon, Pollick — will be a championship-finals contender at next weekend’s state meet at Evanston once the Titans shave and fully rest. The relay is the third seed behind Naperville North and New Trier.
“We always love to go fast in this event,” Hianik said. “It gets the whole team pumped up. Us going this fast is a good sign of how we will perform at the state meet.”
Glenbrook South, which totaled 328.5 points to finish first, advanced a meet-best 13 entries from the sectional. The Titans also won the 200 free relay in 1:26.05, again beating out Conant.
J.J. Connor was one of the better stories Saturday. The senior returns to the state meet after being forced to the deck last season with a heart ailment.
Connor qualified in the 100 free (47.30) and 200 free (1:43.89) and also was part of the 200 and 400 free relays.
Ethan Spalding and Ryan Brander were the other two Titans who qualified in two individual events. Spalding made the cut in the 200 free (1:44.77) and 500 free (4:42.44), and Brander got out in the 50 free (21.94) and 100 butterfly (52.65).
“We all have some time we feel like we can still drop,” Brander said. “We look forward to that.”
