New Trier’s lineup withstands state pressure

DECATUR — Ellie McGuire rolled in one final putt Friday, finishing up her 87 before trudging off the 18th green at Hickory Point Golf Club.
The New Trier senior stopped briefly to talk to her coach, then looked up at the hill where her blue-and-white-clad teammates had perched to watch her finish. A smile spread across her face.
“I want to kiss you guys,” she said.
Senior Nerissa Denenberg shot 77, classmate Callie Nelson added a 78, and the back end of New Trier’s lineup bailed out the Trevians on the opening day of the 2A girls state tournament. New Trier added a pair of 79s from sophomore Lois Suh and junior Lexi Salberg, posting a 313 to seize a four-shot lead in the team portion of the two-day event.
“We try to make it a team sport, and it sure paid dividends today,” New Trier coach Scott Fricke said. “We got scoring from some of our lower-end kids that we really needed today.”
New Trier posted an early score, then watched as the leaders fell back.
Prospect sat in first place for most of the afternoon, getting a solid 77 from junior Noreen Caporusso but ultimately falling into second at 317. Sacred Heart-Griffin is in third at 322, just ahead of Hinsdale Central, which shot 329 with the help of a 76 from senior Jacqueline Bruns.
Maine South opened its first-ever trip to the state tournament by posting 354, good for eighth in the 12-team field.
Near-perfect Miller leads individuals
Stephanie Miller is going to have a chance to win her final high school tournament.
Miller carded a 1-under 71 at Hickory Point Golf Club Friday, taking a one-shot lead in the individual portion of the 2A state tournament. The steady Stevenson senior hit 17 of 18 greens, getting as low as 3-under before her one mistake of the day — a bladed iron shot from a fairway bunker on the par-4 17th — led to a double bogey.
“It was a really solid day up until 17,” said Miller, who has committed to play golf at Illinois next year. “You miss the green, you make a double. ”
Right behind Miller is Neuqua Valley freshman Jessica Yuen, who was 4-under through 9 holes before she made a double bogey on the 12th and faded back to a 72. Buffalo Grove’s Grace Kil was also at even par after a round in which she offset five birdies with three bogies and a double.
“I kept giving myself a lot of birdie chances,” Kil said. “Every time I made a birdie I made a bogey.”
Loyola junior Isabelle Kane is in range, sitting in a tie for fourth after carding a 75.
“I think I’m in a great position,” Kane said. “I’m striking the ball really well. I’m excited.”
In the 1A tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur, Ridgewood junior Sabrina Bonanno leads after a strong first-round 73 that put her three strokes clear of second-place Ashton Goodley of Eldorado. Bonanno made four birdies in a five-hole stretch to close out a wild back 9 that also included four bogies.
Notes: Lake Forest freshman Emily Young is in a tie for 56th place after a first-round 86 that included a 1-stroke penalty for picking up her ball in the fairway without marking it. Young said she was trying to identify her ball. “Total misunderstanding, Young said. “No bad intentions. Just a freshman learning a lesson.” … Concerns over possible storms Saturday forced the IHSA to change the format of the second round to a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
