WAUKEGAN — Glenbrook South put on an amazing exhibition of long-range shooting on Tuesday and was rewarded with a 69-63 victory over host Waukegan in the Central Suburban League South Division opener for both teams.
Glenbrook South (4-3) will host New Trier on Friday, the same night as Waukegan (3-4) will be home to Evanston.
The Titans finished 15-of-20 from three-point range, hitting five in the first period, three in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth. The winners also went 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and 16-of-17 for the game.
“It was a gutsy performance by our team,” said Glenbrook South coach Ben Widner, adding that the Titans did not play well defensively. “But our guys did not miss free throws down the stretch. We went to the line with confidence.”
As for the three-point shooting exhibition?
“By far, it was our best three-point shooting of the year. We work on getting the best shots out of our offense and tonight, it was the three.”
Glenbrook was led Danny Nikitas with 23 points, including 7-of-8 from downtown. Justin Busiel added 13 points, and he hit one 3-pointer. Matt Siegel scored 11, hitting three 3-pointers.
Waukegan was led in scoring by high-flying forward Devonte Taylor with 17 points. Quinton Davis added 15, Jerome Davis 13 and Jordan Johnson 12.
Waukegan led 50-49 after three quarters. Glenbrook took the lead for good at 61-59 on a basket by Conor McCarthy with 2:08 left. The Titans then closed out the game by hitting eight straight free throws.
