Second-half run helps New Trier top Glenbrook South

GLENVIEW — The two girls basketball squads jabbed at each other all night.
In the second quarter, no team led by greater than three points. In the third quarter, no team led by greater than four points.
But from the end of the third quarter through the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, New Trier rode a 9-0 run to take a five-point lead over Glenbrook South. That turned out to be enough as the Trevians ousted the Titans at the Titan Dome on Friday night 47-43.
“We talked before the game, you have to do all the little extra things,” New Trier coach Teri Rodgers said. “You have got to move your feet three extra steps. You got to get low. You got to make the extra pass, and they did that.”
Glenbrook South (17-5 overall, 5-3 CSL South) took a 37-33 lead toward the end of the third quarter when senior guard Katie Dwyer converted a 3-point play. Dwyer camped out under the basket, grabbed a rebound, put the ball back in and drained the ensuing free throw. New Trier freshman guard Kathryn Pedi responded with a 3-pointer, however, to end the third quarter.
The Trevians (11-11, 4-4) scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, as Pedi hit two free throws, junior guard Isabella Bosco drained a mid-range jumper and freshman forward Jeannie Boehm scored on an aggressive move in the post.
The Titans fought back to within a point, but Boehm again won the battle inside and hit an uncontested layup.
Subsequent free throws gave New Trier a 46-41 lead. Glenbrook South senior forward Katie Jennings drained a turnaround jumper from the charity stripe with 1:41 remaining, but the Titans would get no closer.
On a night when the perimeter shots simply weren’t falling for the Titans, senior center Molly McDonagh was their offense. She scored 15 points, which was greater than one-third of her team’s offensive production.
It was the opposite story for the Trevians. McDonagh hounded Boehm for most of the night, but New Trier made up for it with eight 3-pointers, including three apiece from junior guard Megan Neuhaus and Pedi, who finished with a team-high 13 points.
“Obviously, when a team makes eight 3s against you, that’s going to be tough to overcome,” Glenbrook South coach Steve Weissenstein said. “When we did shoot the ball, we probably made our first two 3s and didn’t make one after that.”
After the game, Weissenstein paid Rodgers a significant compliment.
“I told Teri after the game that her team reminds me a lot of a couple of years ago before Maine South got on their run, they were really young,” Weissenstein said. “Toward the end of the year, they kind of started to put it together, and obviously New Trier put it together tonight.”
