McMahon, Glenbrook South blank Prairie Ridge

GLENVIEW — Glenbrook South boys hockey goalie Reid McMahon made 32 saves to record a 4-0 shutout over Prairie Ridge on Saturday night at the Glenview Ice Arena in a game that was marred by a fight at the end. McMahon stopped two breakaways, several point blank shots and limited the Wolves rebound opportunities for most of the game.
“We didn’t get a lot of screens in front of him, but their goalie played a really good game,” Prairie Ridge coach Rick Rewiako said.
McMahon stopped 13 shots in the third period, most of which came with the game in doubt as Glenbrook South (12-18-3 overall, 6-13-4 conference) led Prairie Ridge (23-21-6, 9-11-3) 2-0 until late in the Scholastic Hockey League game.
“I felt a little shaky giving up some rebounds (in the third period), “McMahon said. “But my defense did a great job of getting the pucks out of the zone.”
McMahon added, “We needed this win. And it was great for the team to get the shutout.”
The game ended on a testy note with one second remaining. Prairie Ridge forward Sean VanDamme, who had a strong all-around game, broke free in the slot and was stoned by McMahon. VanDamme fell into McMahon and the Titans defense took exception to the collision and roughed him up.
The Wolves players came to VanDamme’s defense and literally all 10 players were wrestling on the ice as the three officials had a difficult time breaking the two-minute melee up. When order was restored, the clock operator ran off the final second while the players were picking up their sticks. Neither team went to center ice to shake hands.
“I didn’t mean to go into him,” VanDamme said. “I felt bad.”
McMahon concurred: “I don’t think he did that intentionally. It was just an accident.”
John Washburn opened up the scoring for the Titans seven minutes into the contest. Adam Krempasky lit the lamp on a rebound early in the third for the 2-0 lead. One minute later, Prairie Ridge had a two-man advantage, but McMahon stymied them by saving six shots, including three blasts from the point by Wolves All-State defenseman Pat Biewald.
Michael Dillon and Trey Buckingham scored in the final minutes.
