NORTHBROOK — Bandits proved a fitting name on Friday night.
The Resurrection girls basketball team forced a bevy of turnovers with its high-pressure defense en route to a 52-46 victory over Glenbrook South. As a result, the Bandits made away with the Class 4A Glenbrook North Regional championship trophy.
At no point were turnovers more critical than midway through the fourth quarter after the Titans had fought back from nine points down to tie the score at 40. The Bandits responded by forcing three straight turnovers, riding two free throws from senior guard Liz Rehberger, a free throw from sophomore guard Taylor Farrell and a basket from senior guard Kelly Barzowski to a five-point lead that they would never relinquish.
Junior forward Kate Moriarty polished off Resurrection’s sterling fourth-quarter effort with a slashing drive through the heart of Glenbrook South’s defense, flicking it off the glass with her left hand to help the Bandits to an insurmountable 49-44 lead with less than a minute remaining.
“We’ve been in a lot of those games like that this year, so it was nothing the girls haven’t seen before,” Resurrection coach Keith Miniscalco said. “Pressure situations, they’re very much used to that.”
Heavily outmatched in the post, Resurrection relied on seven 3-pointers to defeat Glenbrook South. The Titans failed to make a single shot from behind the arc.
Titans senior forward Molly McDonagh kept Glenbrook South alive on a night when the Titans offense appeared out of sync. After Resurrection jumped out to a six-point lead midway through the third quarter, McDonagh answered with a pump fake and layup. After senior center Jenny Spychala nailed a mid-range jumper to push the Bandits’ lead back to six, McDonagh answered with a well-contested bank shot. She finished with a game-high 22 points.
With their victory, the Bandits move on to the Loyola Sectional semifinals, where they will face Maine South at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
