HIGHLAND PARK — Noah Pickus scored three goals to lead the Highland Park boys hockey team to a 4-3 win over Glenbrook South in an Amateur Hockey Association Illinois opening-round playoff game Sunday night.
Gavin Proeh also scored for the Giants, who will face Sandburg on March 8 in Bensenville in the next round of the playoffs. Eric Davis scored twice for Glenbrook South, which ends its season at 13-20-3.
Pickus opened the scoring for the Giants (34-13-3) with 39.6 seconds left in the opening period. He took a centering pass from Alex Shapiro to beat Glenbrook South goalie Reid McMahon and give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Alex Block had the other assist.
Highland Park’s lead lasted until midway through the second when Glenbrook South’s Taylor Bielanski scooped up a loose puck and beat goalie Ben Berger to tie the game with 7:24 left in the period.
The Giants scored just eight seconds later when a streaking Pickus took a feed from Block to beat McMahon. Once again, Glenbrook South answered when Davis beat Berger to even the score with 4:12 left in the middle period.
Pickus, however, completed the hat trick when he scored with 2:30 left in the second. Proeh gave the Giants a 4-2 lead with 13:37 left in the third before Glenbrook South’s Davis scored his second goal with 4:47 left in the game.
Berger finished with 24 saves for Highland Park. McMahon had 21 for Glenbrook South.
