College roundup: Spinell helps RedHawks win CCHA

Vernon Hills alumnus Steven Spinell, captain of the Miami (Ohio) men’s hockey team, helped the RedHawks capture their fourth Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season title with a 4–2 victory against Ohio State on March 2 in Oxford, Ohio.
It was the final time the Mason Cup will be awarded, as the conference will disband after the season. Spinell finished the game with one of the team’s five assists.
The senior defenseman from Vernon Hills has recorded one goal and nine assists through 36 games this season. He sits tied for second on the team with a plus-13 rating.
Vernon Hills alumna Kelley Gallagher, a sophomore on the Southern Illinois track and field team, anchored the Salukis to a third-place finish in the women’s distance medley relay at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 24 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The finish earned her All-MVC honors.
She also placed ninth in the mile run with a time of 5 minutes, 3.58 seconds.

Hinsdale Central alumnus Connor Marrero, an outfielder on the John Carroll baseball team, recorded three hits in three at-bats and added a walk in his team’s 7–1 win against Muskingum on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla. The win was John Carroll’s fifth straight.
Marrero, an senior from Hinsdale, was leading the team in batting average (.563) and on-base percentage (.622) and was tied for the team lead in steals (four) through 11 games.
John Carroll is located in University Heights, Ohio, and competes at the Division III level.
Matt Palucki, a Maine South graduate and forward for the Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball team, recently earned second-team All-University Athletic Association honors.
The sophomore from Park Ridge started in all 27 of the Bears’ games and helped lead the team to a 21-6 record, including a 10-4 mark in conference play. He finished the season fourth on the team in scoring with 9.5 points per game. He also led the team in rebounds per game with 8.1.
Nick Burt, a Lyons graduate, played in all 27 games for the Bears, averaging 6.0 points per game as a sophomore forward.
Freshman Zarion Marshall (St. Joseph), sophomore Peter Szostak (Glenbrook North) and freshman Tom Garvin (Hinsdale Central) are three additional players on the Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball team with ties to the area.
Niles West alumna Jewell Loyd, a guard on the Notre Dame women’s basketball team, was recently named Big East Freshman of the Year. The Lincolnwood native was the third player in program history to receive the award. She also earned all-conference honorable mention honors and was a unanimous selection for the Big East All-Freshman Team.
Loyd finished the regular season third on the team in scoring with 11.7 points per game and second on the team in rebounding with 5.3 per game.
Glenbrook South alumnus and Notre Dame senior Jack Cooley was named to the all-Big East men’s basketball first team after he was the only player in the league to average a double-double during the regular season. Cooley, a forward, paced the Fighting Irish in both scoring (13.6 points per game) and rebounding (10.6 boards per game). He registered 19 double-doubles, including 10 in conference play.
He helped Notre Dame post a 23-8 overall record (11-7 conference) and earn the No. 6 seed in the Big East tournament, which began Tuesday.
