Mistake after mistake hindered Glenbrook North, while a collective effort allowed Glenbrook South to take the lastest showdown between district rivals.

The Titans looked strong in a 25-18, 25-17 win over the Spartans in their Central Suburban crossover.

GBS located scoring from eight different players.

“We have a lot of people that are ready to come in and contribute in big ways,” said GBS head coach Katie Hoover. “They don’t get nervous out there, they play with intensity just like we do in practice and they believe in themselves.”

The Titans had both games in hand from the start as they took 4-3 and 2-1 leads. GBN made late pushes in each game, but the GBS held strong.

Junior outside hitter Rebecca Tiedmann led the Titans attack with seven kills and shoveled three digs.

“I think it was a great game especially since we were playing (Glenbrook) North,” said Tiedmann. “Our energy at the beginning of the game was just so high and that definitely carried us through.”

Senior outside hitter Lisa Mahon chipped in six kills and an ace.

For the Spartans, sophomore outside hitter Kate Kamin paced the offense with five kills, senior libero Julie Caplan added eight digs and senior setters Abby Shamis and Madeline Pekala dished seven assists each.

Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Emmert, who delivered four kills in Game 2, has been a pleasant surprise for the Spartans.

“When we get her the ball, she usually is good with it,” said GBN head coach Chris Cooper. “The problem is we haven’t been able to get her the ball enough because of our passing. Blocking-wise, she’s doing a really nice job for us so I couldn’t be happier with the way that she’s progressing; we just need to use her more.”

With passing becoming an adventure, Cooper went with both setters, but he’s hoping his “predictable” offense can find its rythym.

“We shoot ourselves in the foot an awful lot,” Cooper said. “I’m hoping our gun will run out of bullets pretty soon. We made a lot of self-inflicted errors that wasn’t necessarily because they did anything great, but because we just made errors.”

Both teams’ fortunes took a complete-180 later in the week.

The Spartans went 5-0 to win the Vernon Hills Invitational. GBN defeated Buffalo Grove twice, including 25-23, 25-23 in the championship match.

GBS on Saturday finished 0-3 at the Lyons quad.
